We all know how important a headline is, right? Whether it’s in an article, an ad, or a social media post, your headline is the first impression you give your audience. It’s that peek into your content that a prospect gets while scrolling through their feed, and it’s the deciding factor in whether or not they click.


So, we can agree that it needs to be crafted with care to achieve the highest level of success. However, the sad reality is that most people get this wrong. In fact, there are a few common mistakes that get made over and over when it comes to writing headlines. If you’re making any of these, don’t worry – I’ve got you covered. Here are the top 5 most common headline mistakes I see, and how to fix them!


1. Misleading Your Audience


The first mistake is a big one: misleading your audience with your headline. This happens when your headline promises something that your content doesn’t deliver. For example, if your headline reads “Lose 20 Pounds in 2 Weeks” but your article only offers vague advice, you’ve lost your audience's trust right away.


When writing a headline, make sure it’s aligned with the content that follows. If you promise something bold, back it up. Otherwise, you're just leading people on—and that’s a quick way to get them to ignore your ads in the future.


2. Lengthy headlines


Let’s face it: People don’t have time to read long-winded headlines. Your headline should be short, snappy, and to the point—like those persuasive promoters you see outside bars trying to get you inside. They don’t shout long speeches; they offer quick hooks that grab attention. Your headline should do the same.


Aim for brevity! Keep it under a sentence if possible, and focus on sparking curiosity or offering a clear benefit. The longer you make it, the higher the chances people will scroll past it without a second thought.


3. Being Too Complicated


Another major mistake I see is trying to sound overly fancy or professional with your headline. This might seem like a good idea, but trust me, it's a huge turn-off. If you're using complex jargon or fancy words in an attempt to sound more intelligent, you're only going to push away your audience.


Imagine this: you’re scrolling through your feed, and you see a headline with a big word you don’t understand. Do you click? Probably not. Keep your language clear and simple. Assume the person reading is a beginner or someone who doesn’t know your topic. Write your headline so that anyone can easily get it without needing to think too much.


4. Overusing Buzzwords


Buzzwords can be tempting. Words like "revolutionary," "game-changing," "exclusive," and "limited-time offer" can spark interest—but if you overdo it, it loses its effect. Too many buzzwords can make your headline sound cliché or manipulative.


You don’t want your audience to feel like they’ve seen the same thing a thousand times. Find a balance. A few well-chosen words can spark curiosity, but overloading your headline with buzzwords will make it fall flat.


5. Being Boring


This one’s pretty simple: If your headline doesn’t stand out or excite people, they’re not going to click. A headline needs to spark interest and make someone feel like they absolutely need to learn more. Think of it like a teaser for your content—it should leave people wanting to know more.


Don’t just state the obvious or be too predictable. Even if your content is good, a boring headline won’t give people the incentive to click. Inject a bit of intrigue, excitement, or emotion into your headlines to make them irresistible.
